Years of slavery had stripped Brandy of all joy and hope for freedom. The definition of love had been contorted into little more than a physical gesture. She no longer held her head high with Spanish pride, but bowed it beneath the weight of shame. One day, however, against the backdrop of a Jamaican auction square, her life changes forever in the hands of an Englishman and his son. A love is extended, far beyond human comprehension, to melt the hurt and pain. This is a story of redemption.

Brandy, a young Spanish girl, has been a pirate's slave for years. She is brought to Jamaica to be auctioned off. She is broken in heart and spirit. An older man named Elliot attempts to buy her, but the pirate captain refuses to sell her to Elliot. When Elliot's son, Joshua, offers himself as a slave if he will free Brandy, the pirate agrees.Elliot takes Brandy home and heals her physically and spiritually. She is overcome by the love Joshua showed for her, and she begins reading the gospels. She eventually gives her heart to her Savior, Jesus, and starts to help other slaves come to know Jesus' love.
This book is very short, took me less than a half hour to read. I didn't see one typo throughout the whole book, which was great. But since the story was so short, there was little character development, little background info provided, etc. It definitely focused only on the saving power of Jesus. I think I would have liked it better had it been more fleshed out.
Obviously, the book is full of symbolism and representations. Elliot represents God, Joshua represents Jesus, and Brandy represents imperfect mankind. That being said, some might find this book to be very preachy. Of course, the author has every right to write whatever she wants. But some readers might feel that she took the "jesus is our savior" message too far. The last two pages of the book is a note by the author. There she includes a prayer for the reader to say. It says, in part, that because we sin, we will all go to hell. Unless, of course, we simply accept Jesus as our savior. The author then concludes by claiming that if we say the prayer she provided, we will escape from hell and be granted eternal life in heaven. She made it sound pretty easy. Anyways, if that sounds like something that might bother you, then this book may not be a good choice.
