Originally serialized in a periodical of boys' adventure fiction, The Black Arrow is a swashbuckling portrait of a young man's journey to discover the heroism within himself. Young Dick Shelton, caught in the midst of England's War of the Roses, finds his loyalties torn between the guardian who will ultimately betray him and the leader of a secret fellowship, The Black Arrow. As Shelton is drawn deeper into this conspiracy, he must distinguish friend from foe and confront war, shipwreck, revenge, murder, and forbidden love, as England's crown threatens to topple around him.

This copy of Stevenson's excellent historical fiction piece is particularly attractive from the photo on the front cover, but the size is unusually wide and thin. No big deal really, except that there is no title or any mark at all on the book's spine. Sitting on my shelf among hundreds of books, I tend to like to see the title. Worst of all, the print is unusually small. I'm by no means far-sighted and the print is still too small. Enough to make eyes sore small.

Recommend the story and dissapointed at this copy. It's bound more like a workbook or handbook, and is hardly the right book for a coffee table book. Sort of thoughtless choices.

The Black Arrow Robert Louis Stevenson 9781542532563 Books Reviews

I am a total "Black Arrow" fan, so I loved the addition of the N.C. Wyeth illustrations, which enhance a true classic. The thing that disappointed me was the absence of any appreciable annotation in this edition. There IS Stevenson's footnotes about Richard Crookback being much younger than he is represented in the text (Richard Crookback was 8-9 years old at the time of the story May, 1460-January, 1461). Outside of these original footnotes there is no other annotation outside the prefatory material at the beginning. I still have to give this item a "majority favorable" rating since I love it so much.
The Black Arrow was an enjoyable, fast-paced adventure novel. The protagonist was flawed in a way that made him believable and likable. Best of all, his flaws serve the reader as subtle cautionary tales against haste and violence while still providing a very entertaining read.

Written for adolescents, I expect that the novel's period-style language would be somewhat difficult for younger readers today although I do think that the lessons are valuable enough that young people should be encouraged to at least attempt what is otherwise a not very challenging read. The ending, the change in the protagonist's goals and his realizations about his own actions were very satisfying.

Additionally, I found the free edition to be adequate and free from distracting format errors or other issues.
I can't remember a story about Knights, I have enjoyed more than this. "Realistic" speech, and spelling. I think the book is free. Whispersync is only $2.99, which I highly recommend. Although I think we should all start writing that public domain classics, novels etc... Should be free for registered members and Whispersync for them should never cost more then $0.99.
Again this is easily one of the best stories of Knighthood I've ever read.,
This is a rip roaring adventure story as only RLS can write. However, it is not one of his better known stories and for good reason. It takes place during the War of the Roses and assumes the reader has a basic understanding of this period of English history. It also is written in a dialect that took getting used to before the reader could easily understand what was being said. I would not suggest this to a first time reader of Robert Louis Stevenson and would redirect them toward the better known works of Treasure Island or Kidnapped.
Great classic story in the time of the War of the Roses in England, between the end of the 100 year war and the beginning of the Tudor dynasty.

The story centers around the adventures of a young man, Dick, who finds the knight that has raised him was actually the murderer of his father and only kept him alive to sell his inheritance.

The story then turns into one deadly encounter after another as Dick tries to stay alive while fighting against his old master. His timely escape from one deadly episode after another is in the style of modern political action heroes such as Mark Cole ant Mitch Rapp.

While the setting of the story is dated and told in a somewhat archaic style, if you enjoy a good adventure story full with love, betrayal and a lot of fighting go ahead and give The Black Arrow a try.
It would be interesting to read the entire story of the criticism that surrounded the release of Treasure Island. Evidently, Treasure Island met great amounts of criticism, so Robert Louis Stevenson wrote this book to prove that he could write great literature.

This is a great book, but it is much deeper. It lacks the simplicity and the unpretentious character of Treasure Island. Posterity voted for simply told good stories and forgot this bid for greatness.

With that said, this is a well told story of the end of Richard the II's reign and the beginning of Henry Bollingbloke's. It lies well within the context of true history and you will not guess what happens next. It is a good suspense as well as a good historical novel.
After reading about two other e-versions of The Black Arrow containing the N.C. Wyeth illustrations, I took a chance and hunted for another version and found this one. I love it. I will admit to being more interested in the quality of the illustrations than of the text, but the book seems well organized and navigable and the font is clear and easy to read. I am viewing it on a fire HD 7" and find the quality reproductions of Wyeth illustrations in this book to be wonderful. I was so happy to find one of my life long ( I'm 65) favorite illustrations was included as it should have been ( that original painting and others are in the collection of the Brandywine Museum in Chadd's Ford, PA ). I was able to get fine quality enlargements and good color with none of the pixelization problems that other reviewers complained about in the other two versions. I'm amazed and delighted to have found this at such a good price too!
